Childhood and Youth

Dhirubhai Ambani was born on December 28, 1932, in the small village of Chorwad in the state of Gujarat, India. He came from a modest background, and his father was a schoolteacher. Even as a child, Dhirubhai displayed an entrepreneurial spirit, selling bhajias (deep-fried snacks) to pilgrims visiting Mount Girnar.

With a dream of making it big, Dhirubhai moved to Aden, Yemen, at the age of 16 to work as a gas-station attendant. It was here that he gained exposure to the world of trading, which would later shape his business acumen. He absorbed knowledge and skills by observing the diverse business community in Aden, laying the foundation for his future success.

The Birth of Reliance

Dhirubhai Ambani returned to India in 1958 and started his first business venture, a small textile trading company, which he named Reliance Commercial Corporation. He initially operated out of a tiny 350-square-foot office in Mumbai, but his dreams were vast. Ambani envisioned Reliance as a global conglomerate that would span various sectors.

Dhirubhai’s sharp business acumen, relentless drive, and astute understanding of market dynamics soon earned him a reputation as a formidable player in the textile industry. He rapidly expanded his operations, realizing the potential for vertical integration in textiles.

Partnerships and Collaborations

One of Dhirubhai’s significant strengths was his ability to forge strategic partnerships. He believed in collaboration and surrounded himself with talented individuals who shared his vision. One of his notable partnerships was with his childhood friend, Champaklal Damani, who invested in Reliance during its early days. Their collaboration laid the foundation for the company’s growth and success.

Dhirubhai’s Sons and Succession

Dhirubhai Ambani had two sons, Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani. Both sons played crucial roles in the growth and expansion of Reliance. After Dhirubhai’s untimely demise in 2002, the reins of the business were passed on to his sons.

Mukesh Ambani, the elder son, took over as the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited. Under his leadership, Reliance transformed into a global conglomerate with interests in petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas exploration, telecommunications, and more.

Anil Ambani, the younger son, started his own venture, Reliance ADA Group, which encompassed diverse sectors such as power, infrastructure, finance, and entertainment. However, due to various business challenges, the two brothers eventually parted ways, each focusing on their respective ventures.
